LIVERPOOL, England (AP) – Liverpool playmaker Florian Wirths missed Saturday’s Premier League game against Chelsea due to a gastrointestinal illness, manager Arne Slott said.
The Germany international missed training this week due to illness, and Slott left him out of the squad ahead of Chelsea’s visit to Anfield.
“He tried everything to get in,” Slott told TNT Sports in a pregame interview.
Slott described the illness as a “stomach infection.”
“He hasn’t been feeling well this past week,” Slott said. “He tried to train at the beginning of the week, but eventually things got so bad that he wasn’t able to train with us yesterday and he couldn’t be with us today.”
“Florian was a bit unwell, but he trained with us yesterday,” Slott said at Friday’s press conference when asked about Wirtz.
Fourth-placed Liverpool are out of contention for the Premier League title, but are aiming to qualify for next season’s Champions League.
