LONDON (AP) – Former England defender Millie Bright announced on Wednesday her retirement from football with immediate effect at the age of 32, citing “playing through injury for the past six years”.
“I’m tired. I’m just human,” Bright said in an emotional video posted by Chelsea, where he has been since 2014.
Bright, who has not played for Chelsea since February due to an ankle problem, withdrew from selection for last year’s European Championship, which England won, citing health reasons.
She made 88 appearances for England, played a key role in her national team’s title win at Euro 2022, and won eight league titles with Chelsea.
Chelsea announced that Mr Bright will remain at the club as a board member of the Foundation and a club ambassador.
“I’m ready to take on life and do bigger things with the club, and doing that is really, really special for me,” she said. “You may lose me on the pitch, but you will never lose me as a member of Chelsea.”
