BERLIN (AP) — Borussia Dortmund clinched a place in the Champions League with an easy 4-0 victory over an unfocused Freiburg side in the Bundesliga on Sunday.
Maximilian Baier, Selou Guirachy and Ramy Bensebaini effectively sealed the result in the first 30 minutes, with substitute Fabio Silva scoring in the second half.
Dortmund keeper Gregor Kobel denied Siriake Irie’s brutal goal.
With three matches remaining, Dortmund are guaranteed to finish in the top four and qualify for Europe’s top club competition.
Freiburg coach Julian Schuster made a number of changes to his team following the heartbreaking defeat. Stuttgart, German Cup semi-final on Thursday.
Freiburg will next face Sporting Braga away in the first leg of the Europa League semi-final.
At the time of debut
Dortmund manager Niko Kovac gave Samuele Inacio his first start and the 18-year-old Italian forward made the most of it, drawing applause when he was sent off in the 74th minute.
U-17 USA forward Matthijs Albert played the final minutes and made his Dortmund debut. The 16-year-old from Greenville, South Carolina joined Dortmund’s youth organization from LA Galaxy’s youth organization in 2025. He was a member of the U.S. national team at last year’s U-17 World Cup.
Another young player, 18-year-old midfielder Reuven Tarnutzer, was already late for his debut in Freiburg.
Stuttgart stutters
Stuttgart’s hopes of qualifying for the Champions League ended with a 1-1 draw with Werder Bremen.
Ermedin Demirovic canceled out Jens Stage’s early goal for the visitors, keeping Stuttgart fourth on goal difference with Hoffenheim ahead of next weekend’s high-stakes clash.
Stuttgart and Hoffenheim are on 57 points, two ahead of Bayer Leverkusen, who still have hopes of qualifying for the Champions League.
Bremen picked up the point with the draw against Stuttgart, moving them six points ahead of relegation zone St. Pauli.
Bayern Munich is already sealed the title Last weekend, they will face Stuttgart in the German Cup final on May 23rd.
