York scored a dramatic equalizer 13 minutes into stoppage time against Rochdale on Saturday to earn a 1-1 draw and seal an extraordinary return to the English Football League’s main pyramid.
There were a number of incursions onto the pitch after Josh Stones’ goal, which came from virtually the last kick of the game, broke the hearts of minor league Rochdale.
Needing a win to lead leaders York to the National League title and return to the EFL’s fourth tier, Rochdale took the lead five minutes into stoppage time with a header from Emmanuel Dieselbwe.
Diesselveve’s goal caused home supporters to storm the pitch and the game was delayed by six minutes.
However, after York threw 10 men forward, Stones scrambled to get the ball over the line, and the goal was confirmed after referee Will Finney checked the clock and goal-line technology, sparking another pitch invasion, this time by visiting fans.
York, who scored 108 points en route to the league championship, recently spent five seasons in the Sixth Division National League North.
