ROME (AP) — Claudio Ranieri followed by his resignation as special advisor to Rome. Discord with director Gian Piero Gasperini.
“AS Roma has confirmed that its relationship with Claudio Ranieri has ended,” the club said in a statement on Friday. “The club would like to thank Claudio for his huge contribution to Roma. He has guided the team through a very difficult period and we will continue to be grateful for his efforts.”
Ranieri, 74, resigned as Roma manager at the end of last season, and despite a good performance, the team missed out on Champions League qualification by one point. He then became a special advisor to the team’s American owners and was involved in selecting Gasperini as his successor.
However, Ranieri has recently become critical of Gasperini’s dissatisfaction with Roma’s handling of the transfer market and made his disapproval public.
The team sided with Gasperini.
“Looking to the future, our direction is clear. The club is strong, with solid leadership and a clear vision,” Roma said. “AS Roma always comes first. We have full confidence in the path we are on under coach Gian Piero Gasperini and we have a common goal to grow, improve and deliver results worthy of our history.”
Roma are sixth in Serie A with five matches remaining, five points behind the Champions League standings.
Ranieri came out of retirement to coach his hometown team in November 2024, when Roma were languishing in 12th place. In the second half of the season, the Giallorossi led the team to a fifth-place finish with just one loss.
