PALERMO, Italy (AP) – Goalkeeper Jonathan Klinsmann, the son of former Germany forward Jurgen Klinsmann, is recovering from a broken neck he suffered Saturday while playing for Cesena in Italy’s second division.
A collision with a Palermo player resulted in him being carried off the field on a stretcher with a neck brace and taken to a hospital in the Sicilian capital.
The club said in a statement that initial tests revealed a “fracture of the first cervical vertebrae” and an amputation of the back of the head. The club added that he will undergo further tests by a specialist neurosurgeon.

Klinsmann, who was born in Munich while his father played for Bayern, briefly played for Los Angeles Galaxy in MLS and has also represented the United States at youth level.
He joined Cesena in northern Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region two years ago and has appeared in more than 50 games. The Serie B club is currently managed by former Arsenal, Chelsea and England defender Ashley Cole. ___
