ACCRA, Ghana (AP) – Dominic Frimpong, a Berekum Chelsea player in the Ghana Premier League, was killed when his team bus was attacked by a group of suspected armed robbers, the country’s soccer federation said Monday.
The incident occurred on Sunday as Berekum Chelsea were returning from a match against Samartex in Samreboi, southern Ghana, the club said in a statement.
“As the driver attempted to reverse, masked men welding guns and assault rifles began firing at the bus. The players and staff fled into nearby bushes for cover,” the statement said.
The club announced that one player was seriously injured and was being treated at a nearby hospital.
The Ghana Football Association later announced that 20-year-old winger Dominic Frimpong was reportedly killed in the incident.
“This tragic incident is a great loss not only to Berekum Chelsea, but to Ghanaian football as a whole. Dominic is a promising young talent whose dedication and passion exemplified the spirit of our league,” the governing body said in a statement.
The GFA added that it would strengthen safety measures for clubs traveling for domestic competitions.
In 2023, a bus belonging to Legon Cities, another team in the Ghana Premier League, was attacked by suspected armed robbers, but no injuries were reported.
