DUESSELDORF, Germany (AP) – A German soccer club has made an eye-catching change, firing a coach whose name means “beginning” and hiring another whose name means “end.”
Second division Fortuna Düsseldorf announced on Sunday that they have parted ways with Markus Anfang (whose last name means “beginning” or “beginning” in German) and are bringing in Alexander Ende (“end”) for the remaining five games of the season.
The news prompted jokes on German social media and speculation about how Ende’s job would be to prevent Fortuna from remaining in the second division. He will take charge of the team, which is one point above the relegation zone. Anfang won six of 22 games during his six-month term.
“I am very much looking forward to this exciting challenge at Fortuna,” Ende said in a statement.
“Though the situation is tough, I am absolutely confident that together with everyone at Fortuna we can secure our place in the league and that is all that matters right now.”
