Roberto de Zerbi begins his reign at Tottenham this weekend, but he has already been hit by injuries, making his task of keeping Spurs in the Premier League even more difficult.
Tottenham star Mohamed Kudus has suffered a setback in his comeback from injury and could require surgery. Kudus, 25, has been out since January after sustaining a quad injury during Spurs’ 1-1 home draw with Sunderland.
The Ghanaian international returned to training under new coach Roberto De Zerbi last week and will take charge in his first match this Sunday. But Kudus, along with seven of his team-mates, will not be involved after Tottenham allowed him to return to the sidelines.
Spurs said in a statement on Thursday: “We can confirm that Mohamed Kudus has suffered a setback in his return from injury. The Ghana international forward injured his quadriceps muscle in January’s Premier League game against Sunderland.”
“He returned to team training last week but will now require further specialist tests and possibly surgery. We will keep you informed of any further relevant updates.”

Kudus will be desperate to avoid a lengthy layoff in order to contribute to Tottenham’s fight to avoid relegation and to feature for Ghana at this summer’s World Cup. His country is in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama.
Upon his return to north London, de Zerbi was given a five-year contract and his immediate aim was to “keep happening”. After Igor Tudor’s nightmarish run of seven games, Spurs sit 17th in the table, just one point above the relegation zone.
“We’re here now at the end of the season because we have to win games,” De Zerbi told club media. “In soccer, playing style and tactical stance are important.

“There is a mentality. I want to help the players reach the best mentality that we can show. For me, signing a five-year contract is a big challenge because I intend to be Tottenham manager next season no matter what.”
The former Brighton manager added: “At the moment we don’t have much time to work on further principles, but we have to know what we have to do on the pitch. We have to have good organization with the ball and without the ball. We have to take into account the qualities of the players.”
