Bruno Fernandes continues to establish himself as one of Manchester United’s key figures, while his name continues to be etched into the history of English football. Proof of that is his latest honor as Premier League Player of the Month for March.
The award marks the midfielder’s sixth monthly award during his time with the Red Devils, demonstrating the immediate impact he has had since joining the club in 2020. However, the award means Bruno equals the historic record set by Red Devils star Cristiano Ronaldo.
Fernandes equals CR7 record
The 41-year-old star has won the accolade six times during his time at United. Now, his teammate on the Portugal national team has become a player comparable to him. This milestone sees Bruno join a very select and elite group within the club and share the record with one of world football’s greatest legends.
Fernandes won the Premier League Player of the Month award in his first month of competition in February 2020, but went on to win the award three more times in June, November and December 2020, becoming the first player in Premier League history to win the award four times in a calendar year. Last March, he received the award again, adding to this his latest honor and his first honor of 2026.
The 31-year-old star, who had already surpassed another club legend, Wayne Rooney (who won five awards), now has a new chance – an all-time record.
Harry Kane, Sergio Ajello and Mohamed Salah each won seven awards, and given Fernandes’ contract runs until June 2027, with the option of a further year, he is ideally placed to break the record and become the Manchester United player with the most monthly awards in English league history, and there is no doubt he could reach this figure if he can maintain or even surpass his performances.
Moreover, his influence extends far beyond his individual awards. This season, the Portuguese midfielder has contributed to the team’s performance, providing 16 assists (more than David Beckham’s historic record of 15). As such, Bruno not only contributed to the Red Devils’ attack, but is also four assists away from becoming the player with the most assists in a single season in the Premier League, equaling Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne’s all-time record of 20 assists.
With a Manchester United side aiming to return to the top of European football, Bruno Fernandes aims to not only match Cristiano Ronaldo, but surpass him and leave his own legacy at Old Trafford.
