Talks between Liverpool and Real Madrid could be reignited following reports that Eduardo Camavinga could be available this summer. Los Blancos, who signed Trent Alexander-Arnold last summer, are reportedly dissatisfied with the Frenchman’s development and are considering a sale.
However, given that the Reds have been monitoring the player for several years, Madrid’s impatience could give them an opportunity. Álvaro Arbeloa’s recent comments may be thought-provoking after he laid the blame squarely at the midfielder’s door following the La Liga defeat to Mallorca.
Experts pointed to Camavinga’s failure to track runners properly in the build-up to Mallorca’s opening game against Real on Saturday. Madrid coach Arbeloa wasted no time in distributing responsibility immediately after the final whistle, and his hopes of winning La Liga may have ended as a result.
“We were playing with a numerical advantage, but we lost concentration and conceded a goal,” said the former Liverpool defender. “You lose your marker, you lose track of him, and you pay the price.”
Camavinga’s contract with the Bernabéu is due to expire in the summer of 2029. The midfielder, who also played at Madrid as a left-back, has made it clear that he intends to honor his promise, but the club may have a completely different view.
The player was initially given a six-year contract when he joined from Rennes in 2021 for a potential £35m fee. Despite signing an extension in 2023, Camavinga is probably not as essential as he once was at the Bernabéu.
The Angolan-born midfielder has only played the full 90 minutes six times across all competitions this season. He has also appeared in 15 games off the bench, which is already more than he made as a substitute in each of the past two seasons.
That said, there could be a market for players of his caliber at Anfield. There has been speculation that Curtis Jones is attracting attention both inside and outside the Premier League (although he has no intention of leaving). At the same time, Real are reportedly big fans of Alexis Mac Allister.
It is also taken into consideration that Wataru Endo’s contract is scheduled to expire next year, as the Japanese player recently turned 33 years old. As a result, there may be a desire to provide new competition for Ryan Gravenbirch in a deep midfield position.
If Arbeloa stays this summer and is given control of transfer negotiations, his comments suggest he may be open to a move for Camavinga. And after many years of association with Liverpool, Anfield could tick a lot of boxes as a future destination.
