The Premier League giants pushed hard to sign Zinedine Zidane but had no chance

FDespite being a manager away from the game for several years, Zinedine Zidane remains one of the most popular figures in football. Now, as focus turns to his return, new details have emerged about how close he will be to commanding the Premier League.

According to AS, Chelsea made a serious attempt to bring Zidane to Stamford Bridge while he was away as manager.

The club are said to have “strongly pursued” the former Real Madrid manager, seeing him as a potential long-term solution at a time of constant change in the dugout. But despite the interest, there was no doubt about the outcome.

Zidane, who left Real Madrid in 2021, is widely expected to succeed Didier Deschamps as France’s next coach after the World Cup.

Zidane’s approach has been particularly patient as clubs from all over Europe flock to him.

According to reports, he has consistently limited his options to just two roles: France manager or a return to Real Madrid. This attitude explains why even a high-profile approach like Chelsea’s failed to gain traction.

He became interested in the Blues during a turbulent period when the club was changing managers in quick succession in search of stability and identity. Zidane’s track record made him an obvious target, but ultimately his long-term vision outweighed the short-term opportunity.

Chelsea were not alone in their efforts. Paris Saint-Germain and Al Hilal are also exploring the possibility of appointing Zidane, with the latter reportedly offering significant financial incentives. Still, none of those suggestions changed his plans.

Legacy factors behind Zidane’s decision

Zidane’s coaching style continues to earn him respect throughout the game. During his time at Real Madrid, he won nine major trophies, including an unprecedented three consecutive Champions League titles.

That success has elevated him to the rare category of coaches who can afford to wait for the perfect role rather than chasing the next one. His absence from the touchline only adds to the intrigue.

Zidane did not rush to return to coaching, instead continuing to make choices, spending time with his family and staying connected to football from afar. That patience now appears to be paying off.

France’s moves will determine the next chapter

With manager Didier Deschamps expected to step down after the World Cup, Zidane’s path to becoming an international manager is becoming increasingly clear.

Taking charge of the France national team would be a natural progression in his career, combining his achievements as a player with new challenges as a coach. ?

It is also a role that comes with both prestige and expectations, given the depth of the talent pool in the country.

For Chelsea, the renewed attention to their pursuit of the past is a reminder of how difficult it is to land a manager of Zidane’s high profile.

For Zidane himself, the decision was always about timing and purpose. As clubs across Europe tried to lure him back, he remained focused on one goal.

Now that he’s nearing his return, it looks like his patience has paid off and he’s exactly where he wants to be.
