VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — Sebastian Berhalter and Thomas Muller scored in stoppage time, Eddie Ocampo also scored, and the Vancouver Whitecaps defeated the Portland Timbers 3-2 on Saturday night.
Yohei Takaoka had two saves and one assist for the Whitecaps (4-1-1), contributing to his first career goal in MLS.
Juan Mosquera made his season debut and had a goal and an assist for the Timbers (1-3-2), while David da Costa also had a goal.
Müller scored from the penalty spot to make it 2-2 in the first minute of stoppage time, and Berhalter leveled the score about four minutes later with a shot from the top of the box.
Ocampo scored the first goal in the 6th minute. Takaoka sent a long, arcing ball in front of Ocampo, who evaded goalkeeper James Pantemis who charged from his line and rolled a shot from the edge of the penalty area inside the back post and into the wide open net.
Mosquera tied the score at 1-1 in the 36th minute with a volley from outside the box for a clearance, and then fed Da Coste with a first-touch finish from close range to give the Timbers a 2-1 lead two minutes into first-half stoppage time.
Pantemis finished with six saves.
The Whitecaps had 61% possession and outscored Portland 21-9 and 9-4 on target.
