RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) – National team manager Carlo Ancelotti says the Brazilian soccer federation plans to extend the player’s contract through the 2030 World Cup.
The 66-year-old Italian was appointed to Brazil’s squad for the 2026 World Cup in May last year and has said in interviews that he hopes to take up the job during the four-year World Cup period.
Ancelotti said on Monday that neither he nor his CBF had any issues with extending his contract.
He replaced Dorival Junior, who had underperformed, and had to rush in to complete South American qualifying for the World Cup. Ancelotti has a record of 14 wins, 10 draws and 9 losses.
“If the couple wants to continue, I don’t think there’s a problem,” Ancelotti said at a press conference at CBF headquarters in Rio de Janeiro. “We will formalize this extension either before or after the next World Cup.”
He was here to announce the latest squad for this month’s friendlies against France and Croatia.
The former AC Milan and Real Madrid manager and five-time Champions League winner jokingly said he had spoken to CBF officials about the benefits of extending his contract early.
Ancelotti quipped: “Before the World Cup it will be cheaper (an extension), but after that it will be more expensive.” “I’m very confident.”
