Esther González scored in the 55th minute and Gotham GC won 1-0 on Saturday, spoiling the Boston Legacy’s debut.
Elsewhere in the National Women’s Soccer League, the Kansas City Current returned to its winning streak with a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over the Utah Royals.
Legacy drew 30,207 fans to its opening game at Gillette Stadium, a first-time record for an expansion club.
Boston manager Philippa Paton converted Bianca St. Georges to a central defender and deployed a five-back set. Saint-Georges received his first yellow card in the 40th minute and was sent off in the 77th minute after picking up his second, leaving Legacy with one man less.
San Georges tried to clear the ball, but the ball fell directly into the path of González, who came on in the second half and scored ten minutes later.
There were 33 fouls between both teams, with 7 yellow cards and 1 red card.
Bethune and Sentner make a successful comeback
Croix Bethune and Allie Sentner scored, leading to Current’s victory over the Royals.
Utah defender Tatumn Milazzo scored the first goal in the 35th minute with a header off a short corner kick from Chloe Lacasse.
On her birthday, the newly acquired Bethune responded in the 57th minute. Teammate Sentner dribbled past multiple defenders and scored in the 69th minute to break the tie.
The 2025 NWSL Shield holders are short on players, without back-to-back NWSL MVP Temwa Chawinga. She is recovering from an adductor muscle injury sustained in October.
