Burnley’s time and hopes in the Premier League are running out.
A 0-0 draw at home to Bournemouth on Saturday left penultimate Burnley – one of a number of US-owned teams in England’s first division – in the safe zone with eight points with eight games left this season and facing an immediate return to the Championship.
Burnley have only won four of their 30 league games.
Sunderland, another promoted side, appear to have avoided relegation but are limping towards the end of the season after three successive home defeats, this time to Brighton 1-0.
The only goal was a strange one, in the 58th minute at the Stadium of Light, when Yankuba Minte’s mishit cross from the goal line somehow found its way to the near post.
Sunderland had never lost at home until losing to Liverpool on February 11, but since then they have lost to Fulham and now to Brighton.
title race
The focus then shifts to the title race, with first-placed Arsenal hosting Everton at home, and second-placed Manchester City, seven points behind, visiting West Ham. Chelsea will also face Newcastle at home.
