Southampton produce come-from-behind victory in FA Cup premier league Sunday’s game against Fulham.
Ross Stewart’s 91st-minute penalty gave the Championship side a 1-0 win at Craven Cottage and a place in the quarter-finals.
In the closing stages, Joachim Andersen brought down Finn Azaz in the box, sending the game into extra time. Stewart stepped up and beat Fulham goalkeeper Benjamin Lecomte.
Fulham manager Marco Silva paid the price by making nine changes to his starting XI and leaving out star players such as Raul Jimenez, Anthony Robinson and Alex Iwobi.
The win continues Southampton’s impressive rise under manager Tonda Eckert, who has transformed the club’s fortunes since taking over in November.
The team, who were relegated from the Premier League last season, were fighting for survival in the Championship when former coach Will Still was sacked. They have moved up the standings under coach Eckert and are competing for a playoff spot.
“Overall for the 90 minutes, it’s natural that we go through to the next round,” he told the BBC. “(We) just use this game as fuel for future games.”
