MILAN (AP) — Portuguese forward Vicinha scored as Daniele De Rossi’s Genoa beat Roma 2-1 in Serie A on Sunday, giving the visiting team another blow to Champions League qualification.
Roma’s defeat follows last week’s 3-3 draw with Juventus, leaving them just one point behind in the race for fourth place.
Roma and Como are tied on 51 points, with Como having the better goal difference, but Roma won their earlier meetings in the season and the head-to-head match will be the deciding factor in whether they end up tied. Roma will visit Como next weekend. The top four teams will qualify for Europe’s top club competition.
Genoa opened the scoring early in the second half with Junior Mesias scoring from the penalty spot.
Evan Ndicka responded immediately for Roma, with Vicinha scoring in the 80th minute, five minutes after coming on as a substitute, to give former Roma great De Rossi’s side a second successive home win.
Genoa moved up to 13th place.
Also on Sunday, Fiorentina drew 0-0 with Parma, leaving them on the edge of the relegation zone, while Verona came from behind to beat Bologna 2-1.
Earlier, Lecce defeated Cremonese 2-1 at home, leapfrogging the visitors and placing them in the relegation zone.
Second-placed AC Milan will host first-place Inter Milan in a city derby later on Sunday. Milan have been designated as the home team and will be hoping to reignite their title challenge.
With 10 matches remaining, Inter have 67 points and Milan have 57 points.
