Erling Haaland was conspicuously absent when Manchester City traveled to Elland Road to face Leeds United on Saturday, sparking immediate concerns over the Premier League’s top scorer’s suitability as the World Cup approaches later this year. The Norwegian forward was ruled out after sustaining what the club described as a minor bruise during training.
Manchester City confirmed in a statement on their official website that Erling Haaland is “not fully fit” and will not be able to return to his hometown for the league match against Leeds United.
Speaking to Sky Sports before kick-off, manager Josep Guardiola sought to allay concerns about the seriousness of the problem.
“Two days ago, in the last moments of training, I had some problems. It was a little injury,” he said. “It’s not a big problem, but (Haaland) is not ready for today.”
Erling Haaland falls in love with British croissants
Although the manager’s comments suggested caution rather than crisis, Haaland’s absence was still significant given his prolific record.
The 25-year-old has scored 22 goals in 27 Premier League appearances this season, making him the division’s top scorer.
He has scored 29 goals in all competitions, including seven in Friday’s knockout stage draw between Manchester City and Real Madrid in the Champions League.
In Haaland’s absence, Guardiola reorganized his attack.
Semenyo delivers a knockout punch
Omar Marmouche was placed in the center, with Rayan Cherki and Antoine Semenyo completing the front three.
Despite City being far from their absolute best, their tactical adjustments proved sufficient on a difficult night in West Yorkshire.
Despite having no talisman, City won a hard-fought 1-0, closing the gap on leaders Arsenal to just two points.
The decisive moment came deep in first-half stoppage time. With 10 seconds remaining before the break, Cherki broke through the defensive line and threaded a precise pass to Ryan At-Nouri, who slotted the ball into the box for Antoine Semenyo.
It was Semenyo’s 14th goal of the season, and it was the goal that ultimately separated the two sides, giving the winger a good start to his career at the Etihad Stadium.
Leeds had periods under pressure and probably deserved more from their early efforts, but City showed the resilience that has characterized much of their recent success under Guardiola.
All eyes will be on the coming months
After overcoming sustained pressure, they took advantage of a lack of concentration and managed the second half professionally to grab the vital three points.
With this victory, Manchester City’s title credentials were significantly strengthened. If Guardiola’s team wins their remaining 10 league games, they will win their seventh Premier League title under Guardiola.
Meanwhile, Arsenal take on Chelsea in a high-stakes London derby on Sunday, with Mikel Arteta’s side aiming to maintain their position at the top of the table.
For now, all eyes will be on Haaland’s recovery schedule. With domestic and European ambitions still alive and the World Cup just around the corner, City will want to ensure their top scorer’s quick return, but without risking a more serious setback.
