WOLVERHAMPTON, England (AP) — Arsenal blew a two-goal lead over bottom-placed Wolves on Wednesday, giving Manchester City a big boost in the title race. premier league title.
The league leaders were forced into a 2-2 draw against Molineux after leading 2-0 in the second half.
Tom Edsey’s goal in the fourth minute of stoppage time sealed the comeback for Wolves.
Arsenal forward Bukayo Saka told the BBC: “There was a huge difference between the way we played in the first half and the second half. We lowered our standards and we got punished for that.”
The draw meant Arsenal dropped points in back-to-back games, leaving them just five points behind second-placed City, who had played one more game.
The title race is too close to decide as the top two teams will still face each other at City’s Etihad Stadium.
“(It’s) a time to focus on ourselves, raise our standards and improve our performance, and that’s something we can control,” Saka said.
Arsenal have been top of the table for much of the season, with one bookmaker paying for Mikel Arteta’s side to win the title after opening up a nine-point lead earlier this month.
But Wednesday’s result was the latest sign that the company, which has finished runners-up in each of the past three seasons, is feeling the pressure. They have won just two of their last seven league games.
It was even worse for a Wolves side who blew the lead against Brentford last week but have won just once all season.
Arsenal took the lead in the fifth minute with a header from Saka, and victory looked all but certain when Piero Hincapie ran through and scored their second goal in the 56th minute.
But Wolves’ fightback began in the 61st minute when Hugo Bueno curled a shot into the top corner.
Thanks to Edzier’s performance, the home side have only picked up 10 points this season, and it looks certain that they will end up relegated. It had little impact on Wolves’ chances of survival, but it could have had a big impact on their position higher up the table.
