Manchester City’s Rayan Cherki thought he had scored one of the goals of the season with virtually the last kick of the match as he fired home from the halfway line. Manchester City achieved a dramatic 2-1 victory over Liverpool on sunday.
There were frantic scenes as City players and fans celebrated with great joy at the victory that kept their hopes of winning the Premier League alive.
However, these celebrations were cut short at Anfield as chaos spread throughout the stadium and referee Craig Pawson not only disallowed the goal but also sent off Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai.
what happened?
With Liverpool chasing the equalizer until the end of stoppage time, goalkeeper Alisson came onto the field for a corner kick.
City ran away and Cherki’s shot from the halfway line rolled into Liverpool’s empty net.
Szoboszlai and City striker Erling Haaland followed, scuffling each other along the way.
Szoboszlai grabbed Haaland’s shirt outside the box, but the pair continued running towards goal.
As they neared goal, Haaland grabbed Szoboszlai’s shirt to prevent his final clearance and the ball went over the line.
the celebration will be shortened
Amid City’s celebrations, Pawson was informed by VAR to check the sideline monitor.
After viewing the replay, it was determined that the referee clearly denied a chance by giving Szoboszlai a red card for the first foul.
“After consideration, there was a careless foul on Erling Haaland, who pulled Dominik Szoboszlai’s shirt. Prior to that, Szoboszlai committed a holding offense that denied a clear scoring opportunity. The final decision was a direct free-kick and a red card to Manchester City,” Pawson said.
Guardiola’s reaction
City manager Josep Guardiola insisted after the game that the goal should have stood.
“Referee, you awarded the goal,” he told Sky Sports, “sometimes common sense, right?”
But he wasn’t that annoyed.
“Everything is fine, just like we won,” Guardiola said.
