BARCELONA, Spain (AP) – Barcelona and breakout midfielder Fermin López have agreed to extend his contract until June 2031, the Spanish club announced Friday.
Fermin, 22, is one of the club’s top young players alongside Lamine Yamal and Pedri González.
Fermin was close to a move to Chelsea last summer but remained at Barcelona and remains a versatile member of Hansi Flick’s team thanks to his goalscoring instincts.
He has scored 10 goals this season, including five in the Champions League, and has provided 11 assists despite not always starting.
Barcelona called Fermin’s new contract a “strategic decision”.
Fermin joined Barcelona when he was 13 years old, but his previous contract was due to expire in 2029.
Fermin has only played five games for Spain, but is expected to be part of this summer’s World Cup squad.
