FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) – Dino Topmeler paid the price for Eintracht Frankfurt’s weak defense when he was sacked on Sunday ahead of two crucial games that will determine whether Frankfurt can avoid early exit from the Champions League.
Topmöller has been with Frankfurt since 2023 and led the team to a return to the Champions League after finishing third in the Bundesliga last season.
The club announced in a statement that their working relationship had ended with immediate effect.
His last match was against Frankfurt 3-3 draw With Friday’s game against Werder Bremen, the team’s winless streak became four games. Frankfurt have conceded 39 goals in 17 Bundesliga games.
“Following the downturn of recent weeks, we, the sports management and the board as a whole, have come to the conclusion that a new stimulus is needed,” sports director Markus Krechet said. “So far this season, we have not lived up to Eintracht Frankfurt’s spirit of dynamic, aggressive and compact football.”
Under-21 coach Dennis Schmidt and Under-19 coach Alexander Meyer will take over as Frankfurt’s interim managers ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League match against Azerbaijani club Qarabag. If they don’t win, the results for other teams will be determined and it may be impossible for Frankfurt to reach the playoff round as a top 24 team.
The following week, Frankfurt hosts Tottenham in the final league stage match for both teams.
