MANCHESTER, England (AP) – U.S. midfielder Sam Coffey joined Manchester City from the Portland Thorns on Wednesday, signing a three-and-a-half year contract.
The fee was reportedly worth $800,000.
Coffey won an Olympic gold medal and a SheBelieves Cup. USWNTCity described him as one of the best players in the world.
Therese Chaugran, Director of City Football, said: “Sam is at her best and I think her decision to come here shows the incredible progress we have made as a club and our ambition to continue moving forward.”
City will be hoping the 27-year-old Coffey can help guide the club to the Women’s Super League title this season, with Andrii Jegratz’s side currently top of the table. Chelsea have dominated the division for the past 11 years, with their only league title coming back in 2016.
Coffey said of City: “It’s a very historic, successful club with a huge influence in the city.” “I think this is also a place where we’ve demonstrated our investment in women’s soccer and being part of this movement that’s going on.”
Coffey won the NWSL Championship with Portland.
“Sam’s reputation as one of the best women in the world speaks for itself, and we are delighted that she has chosen to come here ahead of other potential suitors,” Shogran said. “We believe she has all the qualities needed to succeed at City and the WSL more broadly, and we are excited to see how she can improve an already great squad of players.”
