LONDON (AP) — Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has undergone surgery on his right hamstring, a potential concern for Uruguay with five months until the World Cup.
Tottenham announced on Tuesday that Bentancur suffered the injury during last week’s 3-2 Premier League defeat against Bournemouth.
The English club did not provide a timeline for Bentancur’s possible return, saying only that he would “begin his rehabilitation with the medical staff”.
The World Cup, hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, begins on June 11th.
Uruguay is in the same group as Spain, Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia.
Tottenham are already without midfielders James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski through long-term injuries, while winger Mohamed Kudus is not expected to return until after the March international break due to a thigh problem.
British media have reported that Spurs are planning to transfer Atletico Madrid midfielder Conor Gallagher.
