RABAT, Morocco (AP) – Organizers of the African Cup of Nations have condemned the “unacceptable conduct of players and officials” and are reviewing video evidence of a journalist’s dispute after the Algeria-Nigeria quarter-final.
The Confederation of African Football announced on Monday that it was also investigating the incident during the quarter-final match. Cameroon and host country Morocco.
“CAF strongly condemns any inappropriate behavior that occurs during the match, particularly directed towards the refereeing team and match organizers,” CAF said in a statement. “Appropriate action will be taken against those whose behavior is inconsistent with professional conduct at CAF events.”
After the game, a scuffle broke out on the field between players and team officials. Algeria loses to Nigeria Off to Marrakech on Saturday.
Referee Issa Sy was escorted off the field by furious Algerian team staff. A video clip showed the rhino still being tracked in a mixed media and broadcast zone on its way to the hut.
Video also showed accredited media struggling in the mixed zone as players waited to pass for interviews after the game.
“CAF has referred the matter to the Disciplinary Committee for investigation and for appropriate action to be taken if the identified persons are found guilty of any wrongdoing,” CAF said.
