IIt has been officially announced that Ruben Amorim has been sacked as Manchester United manager. The Portuguese manager will end his tenure in the Old Trafford dugout after 14 months in charge. Former United player Darren Fletcher, who previously coached the Red Devils Under-18s, has taken over the first team on an interim basis and will be on the bench for Wednesday’s game against Burnley.
Amorim was appointed Manchester United manager in November 2024 and led the team to the Europa League final, although they lost the title to Tottenham.
The Portuguese manager’s last game in charge of United was a 1-1 draw with Leeds on Sunday, after which he made prescient comments: “I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not to be the manager of Manchester United.” That’s clear. I know my name isn’t Tuchel or Conte or Mourinho, but I’m the manager of Manchester United. And that’s going to be the case for 18 months, or until then.”The board decided to change that. I want to finish this. I intend to continue working until someone else takes office. ”

The club’s official statement indicated that there was a disagreement among United’s board in the decision to sack Amorim, saying: “With Manchester United now in sixth place in the Premier League, the club’s board has reluctantly decided that now is the right time to make a change. This will give the team the best chance of achieving the best possible position in the Premier League.”
In terms of sport, Manchester United are sixth in the Premier League with 31 points, 17 points behind Arsenal who lead the English domestic championship.
