Diogo Jota was never far from the minds of both clubs when Liverpool played against Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Premier League meetings became a common mourning event after the football star’s death in July.

His achievements took center stage on an emotional afternoon that brought his former team together to pay tribute to the Portuguese talent before kick-off at Anfield, with his sons Dinis and Duarte returning to the pitch as mascots.

This powerful reminder of the player and his father who passed away in July set the tone for a match with special meaning. It was the first time his two English clubs, Liverpool and Wolves, had played each other since the 28-year-old and his brother Andre were killed in a car crash.

Jota’s journey has deeply connected both clubs, and legendary manager Jurgen Klopp, who signed him in 2020, looked back on his former player in a heartfelt tribute, valuing humanity over goals.

“Why was he so loved? For me it’s simple,” Klopp wrote in the Observer. “Because in Diogo, people saw the best of themselves, or maybe the best of what we wanted to be.

“He was humble and honest. He never pretended to be who he was. Diogo was just Diogo. Unashamed.

“I remember the footballer with great pride, but it is he who I remember most.”

The tragedy occurred while Jota was returning from northwest Spain to cover Liverpool’s pre-season campaign, a moment that stunned teammates, fans and clubs across Europe.

Current Liverpool manager Arne Slott also mentioned the defeat in his matchday notes, speaking of the pain surrounding Jota’s family during their first Christmas without him.

“Looking back on everything that has happened over the past 12 months is a rollercoaster of emotions,” Slott said, acknowledging the difficulty of such moments during the festive period.

Liverpool have retired Jota’s number 20 jersey from all teams, fans will sing his name in the 20th minute of every home game this season, and Liverpool’s owners Fenway Sports Group have also pledged to honor the remainder of Jota’s contract.

His widow Lute Cardoso and their three children will continue to have full support in the $188,000-a-week deal, which highlights the depth of Jotta’s legacy in the club’s history.

He won the Premier League title under Slott and in 2022 won both the FA Cup and League Cup with Liverpool under Klopp.

Liverpool slip past Wolves with attack from Grabenwerch and Wirtz

Jota’s links with Wolves are equally deep. He joined on loan from Atlético Madrid in 2017 and helped the club win promotion to the Premier League before joining on a permanent transfer.

Over two further seasons, Jota scored 44 goals in 131 appearances for Wolves, establishing himself as one of the league’s most persistent forwards before earning a move to Anfield.

Wolves manager Rob Edwards and his team paid tribute to Boxing Day by visiting the Jota mural outside Anfield before the match, strengthening the bond between club and players.

Both supporters praised him during the match. As the clock struck 20 minutes, the stadium rallied in song and wherever Jota played, the tribute he commanded echoed.

On the pitch, Ryan Gravenbirch broke the Reds’ deadlock and Florian Wirtz added his first goal for the club as Liverpool defeated Wolves 2-1 in an emotional match.

Wolves fought back after half-time at Santiago Bueno, but Liverpool held firm and extended their unbeaten run, leaving Wolves without a league win this season.

Wirtz’s performance was inspiring. The German midfielder showed composure and creativity, hinting at the qualities expected from the 116-metre player who is still finding his rhythm.
