PARIS (AP) — Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Matvey Safonov suffered a broken hand after his heroics in the penalty shootout to win the Intercontinental Cup.
Safonov made his fourth consecutive penalty save as PSG defeated Brazil’s Flamengo 2-1 in a penalty shootout on Wednesday, clinching the club’s first world title. He was thrown into the air by his teammates during a celebration.
PSG announced on Friday that Safonov had suffered a fracture in his left hand, but did not say when or how he sustained the injury, saying “his situation will be reassessed” in three to four weeks.
Safonov, PSG’s Russian backup goalkeeper, had not played a single minute for the team until summer signing Lucas Chevalier suffered an ankle injury, which has kept him out since their last match on November 29.
Chevalier was on the bench against Flamengo. PSG’s next match will be against Vendée Fontenay in the French Cup on Saturday.
