RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Veteran defender Thiago Silva ends his stay at Fluminense on Wednesday and reportedly wants to return to Europe to revive his hopes of playing for Brazil at the World Cup.
Fluminense announced the end of the 41-year-old defender’s contract six months ago. He joined the Rio de Janeiro club in May last year.
Fluminense said in a statement that the former AC Milan, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea defender leaves behind a “legacy of dedication and love for Fluminense”. He also played there from 2006 to 2008.
Earlier on Tuesday, former Chelsea defender John Terry said on TikTok that he would like to see the Brazilian return to Stamford Bridge, where he won the Champions League title in 2021. Terry said: “His two children attend our academy and he will definitely be back here in London with his family for Christmas.”
Thiago Silva helped Fluminense reach the semi-finals of the Club World Cup in July and was a starter for most of the Brazilian club’s season, which ends in December.
The defender has been part of the Brazil squad for the past four World Cups. He also won the 2013 Confederations Cup and the 2019 Copa America with his national team.
