HARRISON, N.J. (AP) – Former U.S. captain Michael Bradley was promoted Monday to replace Sandro Schwartz, becoming the New York Red Bulls’ 21st coach in 31 seasons, taking over the job his father held 20 years ago.
Bradley was appointed coach of MLS Next Pro Third Division Red Bulls II on June 12, and led the team to the league title.
The 38-year-old scored 17 goals in 151 international appearances between 2006 and 2019, and spent 20 years with the New York/New Jersey MetroStars (2004-05) and Heeren. He played for Fern (2006-08), Borussia Monchengladbach (2008-11), Aston Villa (2011) and Chievo Verona (2011-12). Rome (2012-14) and Toronto (2014-23).
Bradley served as an assistant to his father Bob at Stabek in Norway during the 2023-24 season. His father coached the U.S. national team from 2006 to 2011.
New York finished 10th in the Eastern Conference with 12 wins, 15 losses, and 7 ties, missing out on the Major League Soccer playoffs. Schwartz was fired on October 27th after two seasons.. The team finished seventh in 2024 and advanced to the MLS finals, but lost to LA Galaxy.
The Red Bulls began playing as the New York/New Jersey MetroStars in 1996. They have never won an MLS championship.
