GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) – Celtic suffered a crushing 3-1 defeat to St Mirren in the Scottish League Cup final on Sunday.
Celtic’s new manager Wilfried Nancy Having only been hired at the beginning of the month, he missed out on the chance to win his first trophy with the Scottish giants.
But Celtic’s difficult season took a turn for the worse as Jonah Ayunga lifted the trophy with a second-half brace at Hampden Park.
Marcus Fraser put St Mirren ahead in the second minute, but Reo Hatate equalized in the 23rd minute. Ayunga scored goals in the 64th and 76th to seal the upset.
Nancy joined Celtic from Columbus Crewe after a difficult start for the defending Scottish Premiership champions.
Former manager Brendan Rodgers retired in october Celtic were eight points behind Hearts, who were top of the league at the time. Celtic were also eliminated from the Champions League by Kazakhstan side Kairat Almaty.
Prior to Nancy’s appointment, former managers Martin O’Neill and Sean Maloney were appointed on an interim basis.
Celtic defended the trophy last season after winning the League Cup for the 22nd time.
