MADRID (AP) — Xabi Alonso thanked his players for their attitude after another defeat and said he was confident Real Madrid would soon overcome its slump.
Madrid lost 2-1 to Manchester City Wednesday saw them win just two of their last eight competitive games in the Champions League.
Alonso said: “The players gave their all. I have nothing to criticize today. I really appreciate their attitude. We have to keep moving forward.” “At the moment, the results are not as good as we had hoped.
“We’re critical, we demand a lot from ourselves, and we understand our fans. We have to keep working hard. I believe we can get through this because everything will pass, and I’m confident we can do it.”
Following this result, criticism of Alonso increased, and there were even jeers from the crowd at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium.
“I understand why they blow the whistle. The demands are so high here that we have to accept it as normal,” Alonso said. “I want to turn things around, improve my physical and mental condition, and bring back injured players. There’s still a long way to go.”
Spanish media reported that there was a rift between Alonso and some members of the team, but the players began rooting for him immediately after the loss.
Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and defender Raul Asensio also said the team is united and everyone supports Alonso. Rodrigo hugged Alonso on the sideline after the goal, admitting it was to show the players they were with the coach.
Alonso said having to deal with criticism in a powerhouse like Madrid is “nothing new for a leader”.
“We have to accept this situation. As the coach of Real Madrid, we must understand that the situation can change and be ready to face this situation bravely, responsibly and self-critically,” Alonso said. “Despite the result, I found positive things personally and overall. Other things didn’t go quite as well, but we’re still in it.”
