FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) – MLS champion Inter Miami’s roster for next season continued to take shape Thursday with the announcement of the signing of defender Ian Frey to a contract extension through the 2028-29 season.
Frei has played 35 games in all competitions for Inter Miami this season, scoring one goal and providing four assists. He missed the 2021 and 2022 seasons due to injury.
“It feels great to continue this journey here. This club has put a lot of faith in me over the last five years I’ve been here,” Frey said. “They believed in me and signed me to a new contract even though I was going through the injury. And now that we’ve won MLS Cup, I’m excited for next year.”
Inter Miami declined contract options for Fafa Picoult and William Yarbrough, let Ryan Saylor’s contract expire, and Marcelo Weigand’s loan to the club also expired.
The company continues to hold talks with Lionel Messi’s long-time teammate Luis Suarez over a new contract, and is also interested in the return of four other players whose loans to the club have expired: Allen Obando, Rocco Rios Novo, Baltasar Rodríguez and play-off break star Tadeo Allende.
