LONDON (AP) — Linda Caicedo scored from halftime to give Real Madrid a 2-0 victory over Wolfsburg in the Women’s Champions League on Tuesday, as well as wins over defending champions Arsenal and Juventus.
However, since Paris Saint-Germain drew 0-0 with OH Leuven, they have not won in five rounds and will not be able to advance to the final tournament with one game remaining.
Caicedo, 20, is considered one of the top young players in the women’s world and recently signed a long-term contract with Madrid, where she showed off her talent with the second goal against Wolfsburg.
A through ball from Caroline Weir gave the Colombian striker a start in his own half, before he outran the last defender and rounded the goalkeeper to score in the 67th minute. Madrid’s Maria Mendes then scored the opening goal in the 19th minute, leaving the match with nine men.
Mael Lacral received a second yellow card in first-half stoppage time, while Iris Santiago received a straight red card in second-half stoppage time.
With the win, Madrid moved ahead of Wolfsburg into third place, one of the four automatic spots, and are guaranteed to at least qualify for the play-offs.
Arsenal also won 1-0 at home to Twente, thanks to Beth Meade’s deflected shot in the 10th minute.
Meanwhile, Juventus defeated St. Polten 5-0 to move into second place on points with Madrid and first-placed Barcelona, who will face Benfica on Wednesday.
Christiana Girelli scored two of Juve’s goals, one of which came from the penalty spot.
PSG, a two-time runner-up and semi-finalist two seasons ago, won’t even make the playoffs.
The home draw with Leuven was PSG’s first point of the season, but it means the French club will no longer be in the top 12.
