WASHINGTON, D.C. (AP) – Former Orlando Pride athletic director Haley Carter has joined the Washington Spirit as director of soccer operations for the National Women’s Soccer League team, the Spirit announced Wednesday.
Carter will step into the role at a critical moment as the Spirit works to re-sign star forward Trinity Rodman, a free agent who is attracting attention from overseas teams.
Carter, a former Houston Dash goaltender, spent three years with the Pride, during which time the team won the NWSL title and added dynamic players like Barbra Banda and Lisbeth Obare. Carter left Orlando last month.
Spirit also announced that Nathan Minion has been appointed permanent manager. Minion has been GM since Mark Krikorian left the team in March.
“Haley is exactly the type of leader we want to move our soccer business forward,” Spirit majority owner Michelle Kang said in a statement released by the team. “She brings unique experience as a former NWSL player and a proven executive with a clear commitment to improving women’s soccer. This new role reflects our continued investment in Spirit’s infrastructure and supports Nate and his team as we build a sustainable, world-class soccer organization.”
The Spirit finished the season with a record of 12 wins, 6 losses, and 8 losses, ranking second in the league behind the Kansas City Current. The Spirit advanced to the NWSL Championship Match, but lost 1-0 to Gotham FC.
“Joining Michele’s vision of setting a new global standard for women’s soccer was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up,” Carter said. “What Michele is building is something truly special: a player-first investment model focused on sustainability, innovation and growth.”
