LONDON (AP) — Erling Haaland made Premier League history on Tuesday by becoming the fastest player to reach 100 goals.
After breaking Alan Shearer’s record, the Manchester City forward insisted his outstanding strike rate exceeded expectations.
“I don’t want to say it, but as a striker for Man City, I have to put up great numbers and that’s my job,” Haaland told Sky Sports after scoring the opening goal. City beat Fulham 5-4. “If I don’t do that, people are going to criticize me because that’s the normal thing for people to do, so ultimately…I have to deliver.”
Haaland’s 100th goal came in his 111th Premier League game, when he smashed the ball into the back of the net in the 17th minute against Craven Cottage. Shearer, the league’s all-time leading scorer (260 goals), reached the century mark in 124 games.
“It’s a huge thing and I’m really proud. Of course it’s a huge thing,” Haaland said. “It’s great to join the 100 club.”
Haaland has enjoyed an impressive form since joining City from Borussia Dortmund in 2022, during which time he helped the club win two Premier League titles, the Champions League and the FA Cup.
He scored 144 goals in 165 games.
Harry Kane is the third fastest player to reach 100 goals in the Premier League, reaching that milestone in 141 games. City great Sergio Aguero commanded it in 147, and Thierry Henry became centurion in 160.
“The numbers are insane. They’re insane,” manager Pep Guardiola said of Haaland’s feat. “Certainly he is one of the best players.
“For a striker, it’s a matter of numbers and his numbers are indisputable.”
