MOENCHENGLADBACH, Germany (AP) – Borussia Mönchengladbach on Friday blamed video referees for making two key decisions in their home game against second-placed Bundesliga team Leipzig.
Despite a forgettable, slushy first half with no shots on target for either side, Gladbach continued to push forward right after half-time.
Frank Onorato scored a goal two minutes into the second half, but the home fans’ celebrations were cut short as the goal was ruled out by VAR for a slight offside.
The home crowd was furious again 20 minutes later when the penalty was overturned after the referee pointed to the spot when Willi Orbán tackled Osamu Machino.
Leipzig’s best chance came with 10 minutes remaining, but David Raum hit the bar as he cleared onto goal.
As a result, Gladbach’s winning streak ended at three, leaving them in 11th place.
Leipzig remain in second place, closing the gap on Bayern to five points, but the reigning champions have a game in hand at bottom St. Pauli on Saturday.
This is the seventh consecutive time Gladbach have failed to win a Friday night game.
