hello everyone. Welcome to today’s MARCA English Live UEFA Champions League Blog. We bring you live updates of Chelsea vs Barcelona.
It’s a road trip to Northern Europe for the Catalans as Champions League night returns, with a big clash in a mouth-watering clash against one of the Premier League’s best sides.
Despite sitting second behind Arsenal in England’s top division, and ahead of the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool, Chelsea enter this contention on a somewhat erratic basis in Europe.
Enzo Maresca’s side opened the season with a 3-1 loss to Bayern Munich, but then won 1-0 against Benfica. After that, they finally seemed to be on the mend with a 5-1 win over Ajax, but a 2-2 draw with weaker Qarabag set them back.
With seven points and a 2-1-1 record, Chelsea welcome Barcelona to Stamford Bridge in the same form as the visitors arrived in 11th place in the table.
Marcus Rashford’s goal earned them a 2-1 win against Newcastle, before losing to PSG by the same score. Hansi Flick’s side then defeated Olympiakos 6-1, but ended up drawing 3-3 with Club Brugge.
So it’s an even bill on paper (both clubs are a further second in their respective leagues) and that sets the script for an interesting night of football in the heart of west London. Could it become a classic?
As for the Champions League, both teams have won four times and shared six, further evidence that it is, on paper at least, a fairly close contest in England.
Barça fans will remember Andres Iniesta, the famous winner in 2009, while Chelsea fans will remember Fernando Torres’ last-minute goal that sealed their place in the 2012 Champions League final. There’s history and heritage and even acidity here.
