ASUNCION, Paraguay (AP) — Goalkeeper Nahuel Lozada saved three penalties and Argentine club Lanús defeated Brazil’s Atlético Minero 5-4 in a shootout to win its second Copa Sudamericana title on Saturday.
Lanus, who also won the tournament in 2013, became the sixth team to win the Sudamericana twice.
Carlos Izquierdos, Sasha Marusic, Dylan Aquino, Agustin Cardoso and Franco Watson scored Lanus’ penalties.
Lozada, 32, stopped shots from Hulk, Gabriel Texeira and Vitor Hugo to secure the victory.
The Argentine club has won the Sudamericana title 10 times, including the success of Racing Club in 2024, when they defeated Cruzeiro in the final.
Lanús defeated Universitas de Chile 3-2 on aggregate in the semi-finals to reach their third Copa Sudamericana final. Previously, they had won on penalties in the round of 16 at Rio de Janeiro’s Maracanã Stadium and Central Córdoba, eliminating Fluminense in the quarter-finals.
