Record 8 times champion OL Lyons In Wednesday’s Women’s Champions League match against Juventus, the Reds came back from a three-goal deficit at half-time to save a 3-3 draw.
Veteran Lyon defender Wendy Renard, who has scored over 150 goals for Lyon, leveled the score in the 90th minute with a superb penalty after a handball from Juve captain Cecilia Salvay.
Lyon were trailing 0-3 at half-time as forward Chiara Beccari tormented the defense. Beccari scored in the 12th minute with a lob from the right, linking up with strikes from striker Michela Cambiaghi and midfielder Tatiana Pinto.
Lyon responded with Tabatha Chawinga in the 60th minute and Marie-Antoinette Katoto in the 79th minute.
Elsewhere, Dutch duo Ella Pedemors and Reins Behrenstein each scored twice as double champions Wolfsburg defeated Manchester United 5-2 at home.
Unbeaten Lyon lead with 10 points from four games. 18 team standings Wolfsburg and United, on the other hand, are level with Barcelona on nine points.
The top four teams advance to the quarterfinals, teams ranked 5th to 12th participate in the finals, and the bottom six teams are eliminated.
Later on Wednesday, defending champions Arsenal host Real Madrid as they look to bounce back from two defeats in three games, while Paris FC host Benfica.
Juventus approaches
Lyon deployed a three-pronged attack featuring Ada Hegerberg, Chawinga and Kadidiatou Diani.
However, Hegerberg lost the ball in midfield and after a quick breakthrough Beccali’s shot went over goalkeeper Christian Endler.
The second goal came in the 27th minute, when Beccari took the lead after deploying to the right, and Cambiaghi hit a low cross from the pinto, which finished off by passing Endler, who had easily taken the lead and was behind the line.
Beccari’s smooth pass was deftly evaded by Amalie Vansgaard on the edge of the area, and Pinto ran through to score the goal in the 37th minute.
Juve goalkeeper Pauline Peyrault-Magnin, who was born in Lyon and started her career there, was brought down by Chawinga’s low shot from the left in the same period.
Katoto headed a cross with 10 minutes remaining, but Salvay’s clear hand from a cross from the right gave Lyon a lifeline.
Dutch pair sink to United
Swedish winger Fridrina Rolfe put United ahead in the 14th against her former club, but Wolfsburg equalized three minutes later through Pedemors.
Pedemose scored again in the 37th minute and Behrenstein’s excellent shot into the top corner of the goal made it 3-1 in the 45th minute, but French forward Melvin Mallard only scored in first-half stoppage time.
Behrenstein popped up again midway through the second half, and Vivian Endemann added a fifth goal deep in stoppage time. ___
