MEXICO CITY (AP) — The Mexican cities of Guadalajara and Monterrey will host an intercontinental playoff tournament. 2026 world cupFIFA announced on Wednesday.
The tournament will begin on March 23 and will consist of six teams from five federations vying for two spots to next summer’s World Cup, which will be hosted by Mexico, the United States and Canada.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino said: “These iconic stadiums are the perfect setting for what promises to be a thrilling event full of passion, drama and excitement.”
Stadiums in Guadalajara and Monterrey will also host World Cup matches.
The six countries are Iraq, Congo, Jamaica, Suriname, Bolivia, and New Caledonia. The draw will take place on Thursday in Zurich and the match schedule will follow accordingly.
At next year’s World Cup, Guadalajara Stadium will host four group stage matches, while Monterrey Stadium will host three group matches and round of 32 matches.
Another World Cup venue in Mexico is Newly renovated Aztec Stadium.
