Steven Gerrard recently withdrew from talks to become Rangers manager for a second time, but the Liverpool legend is now on the radar of clubs in the English Championship.
Steven Gerrard has been named on Middlesbrough’s shortlist of three players as they prepare for Rob Edwards’ move to Wolves. The vacancy will be created after Boro granted Edwards permission to speak to the Premier League strugglers after just five months at the Riverside.
Edwards, 42, has agreed a three-and-a-half year deal with Wolves, where he made more than 100 appearances as a player and also coached in their academy. This means Middlesbrough will receive a hefty £3m fee and will be looking for a new manager as they aim to win promotion in the Championship.
Liverpool legend Gerrard is reportedly one of three candidates Boro are considering at this stage. This follows his decision last month to refuse to return to Rangers.
As well as Gerrard, former Middlesbrough manager Tony Mowbray and Valencia manager Carlos Cobelan are also being considered for the role. Mowbray played and managed Boro, while Cobelan has experience in the Championship with West Brom.
Gerrard joined Aston Villa from Rangers just four years ago and has never played in England’s second tier. The 45-year-old most recently coached Al Etifaq in Saudi Arabia, stepping down after 18 months in January.

Gerrard was linked with a second stint as Rangers manager last month following the sacking of Russell Martin. However, the former England captain felt the timing was not right and handed the position to former Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rolle.
Asked by TNT Sport earlier this month how close he was to a return to Ibrox, Gerrard revealed: “Very close. I had some really positive and interesting conversations with the owners. I had family in Bahrain at the time so it felt like it was being rushed a little bit. I had to think a lot in a short amount of time before making the decision.”
“There were some concerns, but if I’m going to take on a challenge this big and important, I have a love and a bond with Rangers. I had to be perfect and 100 per cent ready to take on it again.

“Unfortunately the timing wasn’t right so I stepped aside and wish them the best. They’ve got a great manager and I’ll be watching from afar as a fan and wish them the best.”
As for Middlesbrough, experienced Adrian Viveash, who is part of Edwards’ coaching staff, was in charge of Saturday’s 2-1 home win against Birmingham City. Before the game, supporters unfurled banners criticizing Edwards, who had been relieved of his duties, and chanted chants against him.
