BREMEN, Germany (AP) — Werder Bremen scored twice in the final 15 minutes to beat Wolfsburg 2-1 at home in the Bundesliga on Friday.
Wolfsburg’s recent record has fallen to seven losses in eight games, which will put added pressure on coach Paul Simonis.
Simonis was hired in June after leading the Go Ahead Eagles to a surprise Dutch Cup win, but found life at his new club difficult. Their league performance was poor, and they lost at home to second-division team Holstein Kiel in the German Cup.
Still, visiting Wolfsburg started brightly and looked set for a rare victory when Swedish striker Matthias Svanberg completed a brilliant counter-attack in the 28th minute.
However, Bremen took control in the second half and leveled the score with seven minutes remaining thanks to Jens Stagge’s deft header.
Samual Mbangula then took advantage of the poor defense and scored the winning goal with a volley in the fourth minute of stoppage time.
Bremen moved up to seventh place, while Wolfsburg moved to 12th place.
