Trent Alexander-Arnold paid a heartfelt tribute to Diogo Jota at Anfield ahead of Liverpool’s Champions League clash with Real Madrid on Tuesday night.
The 27-year-old right-back is back on Merseyside for the first time since receiving a shocking pass from a former team-mate in July. The beloved player tragically passed away in a car accident at the young age of 28.
Tributes for Jota and his loved ones poured in from around the world. Alexander-Arnold has now come forward to honor his memory by laying flowers outside Anfield.
He was accompanied by Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso, Dean Huyssen and Emilio Butragueño. He also wrote a touching letter in which he said, “My friend Diogo, you are missed but still very much loved. The memory of you and Andre will live on forever.”
“Every time I think of you I smile and always remember the wonderful times we shared. I miss you every day. Forever 20, YNWA. Love, Trent, and family.”
Earlier in the summer, the right-back shared a message of condolence on social media.
“It’s very difficult to find the right words when your mind and heart are struggling to accept that someone you loved so much is gone,” he said.
“Diogo, your family was your world. They were everything. Our hearts are all broken for Root, his children and his parents. And for Andre as well.
“My brother and best friend. When the pain subsides, I want to remember Diogo with a big smile.
“We had so many laughs and happy moments. He was a great teammate and a true friend. Forever number 20. Rest in peace, Diogo.”
Alexander-Arnold, who shared the pitch with Jota for five seasons at Liverpool, moved to Real Madrid after his contract ended in May, ending a 21-year spell at the Merseyside club.
