SASASUOLO, Italy (AP) – Genoa beat Sassuolo 2-1 with a late goal on Monday, winning their first game of the season and lifting themselves from the bottom of Serie A.
It was particularly rewarding for Roberto Murguita, who took over as caretaker manager after former Arsenal and France midfielder Patrick Vieira was sacked last week.
Genoa moved up to 18th place out of 20 teams, one point behind Verona and two points behind bottom-placed Fiorentina.
The visiting Genoa, who have not won since May, got off to a good start from a corner kick. Goalkeeper Alijanet Muric’s clearance was only reached by Ruslan Malinovsky, who fired a superb shot into the top corner from 25 meters out.
Domenico Berardi equalized for Sassuolo two minutes after half-time, but Leo Ostigardo’s glancing header in stoppage time sparked jubilation in the Genoa dugout.
Sassuolo finished in 11th place.
Lazio go unbeaten in 6 games
Lazio defeated Cagliari 2-0, extending the Roma club’s unbeaten run to six games.
65 minutes into the match, Danish striker Gustav Isaksen broke the deadlock by streaming in from the right and using some great footwork to slot the ball into the far corner.
Mattia Zaccagni scored the second goal in added time, latching on to a disastrous backpass and firing into the top corner.
Lazio looked the more dangerous side throughout. It comes as Maurizio Sarri’s side face a daunting November, with an away game against Inter Milan next Sunday, followed by another away to AC Milan.
Cagliari remain in 15th place without a league win since September 19th.
