WOLVERHAMPTON, England (AP) – Wolverhampton Wanderers, the bottom team in the Premier League, sacked manager Vitor Pereira on Sunday after a winless start to the season.
Pereira joined Wolves in December when the team were second-last in the league, and by April they had secured survival in the high-paying top flight. signed a new three-year contract In September.
However, Wolves entered November with just two points after 10 Premier League games with eight losses and two draws. Pereira’s last game as manager was a 3-0 defeat against Fulham on Saturday.
“Our results and performance this term have fallen below acceptable standards and as a result, it has been determined that a change in leadership is necessary,” Wolves said in a statement.
“This is a time for stability,” Wolves executive chairman Jeff See said in handing Pereira a new contract.
But six weeks later, Pereira was gone.
“Vitor and his team have worked tirelessly for the Wolves and guided us through a difficult period last season, and we are grateful for that,” Sea said.
“Unfortunately, this season has had a disappointing start. Despite our strong desire to give the head coach time and games to find improvement, we have reached a point where changes must be made. We thank Vitor and the staff for their efforts and wish them the best for the future.”
All eight of Pereira’s backroom staff have also left the club, Wolves said.
Under-21 coach James Collins and Under-18 coach Richard Walker will undergo training until Wolves finalize the appointment of a new manager.
Wolves’ next match is against Chelsea in the league on Saturday.
