MADRID (AP) — Vinicius Junior has apologized to Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso, who he substituted during the Clasico against Barcelona, for verbally abusing him, citing his “passion” and “competitiveness”.
“I would like to apologize to all Madrid fans for my reaction after being substituted,” he told X on Wednesday. “Just as I apologized directly during today’s practice, I would like to once again apologize to my teammates, the club, and the president.”
Vinicius was visibly upset when he learned that Alonso would be replaced by Rodrygo in the 72nd minute of Madrid’s 2-1 league win over Barcelona at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium on Sunday.
The Brazilian forward kept his arms outstretched and muttering to himself as he left the field. Vinicius went straight to the changing room and joined his teammates about five minutes later.
He did not mention Alonso in his apology regarding X.
“Sometimes passion gets the better of us,” Vinicius said. “I always want to win and help the team. My competitive nature stems from my love for this club and everything it stands for. I promise to continue to fight every second for Real Madrid, as I have done since day one.”
Vinicius is now being substituted more frequently than under his previous Madrid manager. He also did not start in several games.
During the Clasico, he exchanged words with Barcelona star Lamine Yamal and was involved in a scuffle between players after the match.
