LUSAKA, Zambia (AP) — Abram Grant resigned as coach of the Zambian soccer team on Wednesday after failing to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, eight weeks before the African Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Grant: “I’m proud to leave the team in a much better position than when I took over.” he said in a post on Instagram.
The former manager of Israel, Ghana and Chelsea suffered three consecutive scoreless home defeats against Comoros, Morocco and Niger in this year’s World Cup qualifiers.
Zambia will once again face Morocco and Comoros in the AFCON group. The tournament will begin on December 21st.
Zambia, coached by Grant for about three years, qualified for AFCON for the second year in a row, but failed to advance to the final tournament in the previous tournament held in Ivory Coast.
The federation did not immediately appoint a replacement for Mr. Grant.
Zambia were African champions in 2012, but have never played in the Men’s World Cup.
