FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) – Coach Gregor Korbel made a diving save Tuesday to send Borussia Dortmund into the third round of the German Cup and win a penalty shootout against Eintracht Frankfurt.
After Ritsu Doan fired a shot over the bar, midfielder Fares Chaibi came forward and took the fourth penalty Frankfurt needed to score.
Chaibi fired a low shot to Kobel’s right, the Swiss goalkeeper dropped down to keep the ball, and Dortmund won the shootout 4-2, sparking flares and celebrations from Dortmund’s away fans. Frankfurt continues to struggle with this loss, with only one win remaining in their last six official games.
Dortmund’s Julian Brandt canceled out the opening goal of Frankfurt’s former Dortmund player Ansgar Knauf, and extra time ended 1-1.
Wolfsburg defeated
Second division Holstein Kiel defeated Wolfsburg 1-0 thanks to Alexander Bernhardsson’s penalty kick. Wolfsburg played most of the game with 10 men after Jenson Seelt was sent off in the 36th minute after receiving two bookings in quick succession.
Robert Glatzel’s penalty in the 83rd minute gave Hamburger SV a 1-0 victory over 10-man Heidenheim. Hertha Berlin defeated Elversberg 3-0 in a match between second division teams.
Leipzig, Hoffenheim and St. Pauli will all play second-round games later on Tuesday.
